For this project we used markers to color the outside of the pumpkins and then added water to create the watercolor effect.  The students really enjoyed seeing the water react with the markers.  I will be doing more of these in the future.

Book Carving

Our school was getting rid of some books that were last checked out in the late 70's so before they were all gone I grabbed a few for the art club to carve out.  Each students did about 30 pages at a time to carve their design.  Once it was all completed some painted the insides, others put construction paper on the back.  We glued the edges and inside so they wouldn't move.  Those that had time to create these had them on display in one of the cases at school, heard lots of positive talk from the teachers on this one.  I think next year I will be doing this with old encyclopedias.

Op Art 2nd Grade

Continuing my Op Art for all grades this is the 2nd grade project.
I gave them a grid paper to start, they traced their hands and then colored the background. After the background was colored they colored the inside of their hands the reverse pattern of the checkerboard pattern.

Op Art 6th Grade

These are a few examples of our 6th grade Op Art Project.  The students needed to graph a piece of paper, then put 2 of the same shape in each square, one big, one small.  Then we drew organic shapes on 3 of the sides of the paper. We colored the background first and left the organic shapes white, then we went in and reversed our pattern on the inside of the organic shapes.  This was a lot more challenging for them than I originally thought.  The biggest problem I came across is craftsmanship, I feel the students got overwhelmed on all of the shapes, but the ones that did it right turned out great.

Art Club WIPs

The art club has started a new project based off of the artist WAYNE WHITE.  This has taken a while for us to get started considering that I have been hunting thrift stores to find paintings for all 16 of my students.  But this is just the beginning, they are really pumped about this project and I am sure I will have some great finished project to share soon.

zentangle hands

The 3rd graders traced out their hand on a 6x18 piece of paper, then they made sections and filled each section with a zentangle or pattern.  After it was created they colored in their hand and finally did a blending on the background with crayons.

Picasso Playing Cards

I borrowed this project from GMGART.  We started with looking at Picasso's work and discussing how he drew.  I had all the face cards printed out for the students to observe them as well. They started with a practice sheet and drew out 3 examples of Picasso style card characters.  When they found their best one they then drew that out on 12x18 paper and we colored them with oil pastels.

Positive & Negative

Here was an easy 1 day project that filled that time I needed in order to finish one project and before I started the next.  I had students trace each others profiles on a 9x12 paper, cut out their profile and then trace it again on the other side of the paper.  They cut that out as well and then glued all parts to a large 12x18 paper.  Again this was a great 1 day project to teach positive and negative.

cardboard scluptures

Here are a few sculptures created by the 3rd grade.  It took one day to assemble them and 2 days to paint.

Remix Characters

This project the students had some fun with.  They had to choose 2 cartoon characters and mix them together.  At the end of the project we should be able to tell which characters they mixed.  They were not allowed to trace the figures.

Color Wheel

This was a project that my 7th grade class did in one day.  We talked about the colors and separated them out onto a large circle I drew onto my bulletin board.  Each table was assigned a color to look for in magazines.  The students did a great job of following instructions and getting this complete.  After finishing this one which is about 38 inches, I am really wanting to do a larger one for the elementary.

3D sculpture

This was a great 1 day project for 3rd graders.  We started by talking about sculpture and then element of 3d.  I then did a quick demo of how to fold, twist, and glue the construction paper strips to the paper. I have the students the rest of the time to work except the last 5 min.  Those minuets were used for the students to take a walk around and observe the others students work.
They were pretty excited to take these works with them.
I recently found this project on another site and then forgot where I saw it, so to that teacher I am sorry I can not link this to you.

Art Club WIPS

Here are a few WIPs from my 8th grade art club.  Their project is to create a work of art using newspaper as their main medium.
